Hitting

  • Stance and grip3 videos

Feet too narrow or too wide, weight back on the heels, or the bat held deep in the palms.

  • Load and timing4 videos

Late on pitches your player should hit, or lunging forward early with the hands and weight moving together.

  • Stepping in the bucket2 videos

The front foot strides away from the plate (toward third base for a right-handed hitter, first base for a left-handed one) instead of toward the pitcher.

  • Casting and a long swing3 videos

The hands and the barrel push out away from the body early, so the swing goes around the ball and is late on pitches inside.

  • Pop-ups and rollovers5 videos

Many weak pop-ups, or weak ground balls to the pull side as the top hand rolls over at contact.

  • Pulling off the ball2 videos

The front shoulder and the head fly open early, so your player misses pitches away or hits them off the end of the bat.

  • Rotation and bat speed2 videos

The arms do all the work and the hips barely turn, so the swing looks slow even when your player swings hard.

  • Hitting the outside pitch2 videos

Pitches on the outer half are pulled into weak ground balls or missed, and nothing goes to the opposite field.

  • Approach and two strikes4 videos

Frozen by pitches near the zone with two strikes, or chasing pitches well outside it.

  • Bunting5 videos

Stabbing at the ball, bunting it straight back to the pitcher, or popping it up.

  • Tee and toss drills at home6 videos

Your player wants more swings between practices, with a tee, a net and a parent to toss.

Pitching

  • Leg lift, balance and stride4 videos

Falling off balance at the top of the leg lift, rushing toward the plate, or striding off line.

  • Arm action4 videos

The arm is late getting up when the front foot lands, or it looks stiff and tense through the throw.

  • Flying open4 videos

The front shoulder and chest turn toward home plate early, and the glove arm swings away to the side.

  • Throwing strikes4 videos

Walks, pitches all over the zone, and a delivery that looks different every pitch.

  • The changeup4 videos

Only a fastball, or a changeup thrown by slowing the arm down, so hitters see it coming.

  • Pitching from the stretch2 videos

A slow delivery with runners on base, or a pitcher who loses the strike zone once a runner is on.

  • Arm care and rest4 videos

A sore arm, pitching on back-to-back days, or pitching for more than one team in a season.

Throwing

  • The four-seam grip3 videos

The ball held deep in the palm, or gripped any old way, so throws tail and sink.

  • Throwing the right way4 videos

Throwing with the arm alone, pushing the ball like a dart, or stepping with the foot on the throwing-arm side.

  • Long toss and a throwing routine3 videos

An arm that is not built up before the season, or hard throws with no warm-up.

Fielding

  • Ready position3 videos

Standing flat-footed with the hands on the knees as the pitch is thrown, so the first step is late.

  • Ground balls and short hops6 videos

The glove between the feet or the legs straight, so balls go under the glove or bounce off it.

  • Backhands and forehands5 videos

Reaching across the body with the glove when the feet could have moved, or the ball skipping past the glove.

  • Turning two5 videos

Slow feeds, or the ball fumbled on the turn at second base.

  • Playing first base5 videos

Stretching too early, missing throws in the dirt, or a foot that comes off the bag.

  • Catching fly balls4 videos

Running in on balls hit over the head, or drifting under the ball and missing it.

  • Outfield throws and relays4 videos

Lobbing the ball in, throwing over the cutoff, or fielding the ball flat-footed before the throw.

  • Glove work at home4 videos

Your player wants more ground balls between practices, with a wall and a ball.

Catching

  • Catcher’s stances and signs4 videos

Sitting back on the heels with runners on base, or signs the other team can read.

  • Receiving and framing4 videos

Stabbing at the ball, or the glove jerking the pitch out of the strike zone.

  • Blocking5 videos

Trying to catch balls in the dirt with the glove alone, so they get by.

  • Throwing to second4 videos

Standing all the way up before throwing, or slow feet after the catch.

Baserunning

  • Running to first4 videos

Slowing down before the bag, jumping at it, or a wide turn on a hit.

  • Leads and steals6 videos

A late jump, or a lead so big the pitcher picks the runner off.

  • Sliding2 videos

Slowing down before the base, or sliding late and jamming a foot into the bag.
